The Royal Order of the Polar Star was conferred on former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on 22 October 2024, along with a further nine foreign citizens. Stoltenberg was awarded the Order for his significant contributions in support of Sweden’s NATO accession.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson formally presented the Polar Star on behalf of HM The King in conjunction with the annual Munich Security Conference.

“Jens Stoltenberg’s leadership and diplomatic skills played a key role in Sweden’s accession to NATO. His ability to promote cooperation and build alliances has contributed to our security. This award is an expression of our gratitude for his efforts,” says Mr Kristersson.

About the four Royal Orders

In December 2022, the Government adopted a new ordinance on Sweden’s highest distinctions for meritorious achievements. These include the four Royal Orders of Knighthood: the Order of the Seraphim, the Order of the Sword, the Order of the Polar Star and the Order of Vasa.

Decisions to award Orders are issued by the Chancery of the Royal Orders. Decisions pertaining to anyone other than a member of the Swedish Royal House are announced upon recommendation by the Government or, when the Order concerns matters of protocol, the Government Offices.
