On 24–26 March, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard visited Israel and Palestine. The purpose was to examine how Sweden can contribute to the improvement of the current situation and promote bilateral relations.
“The situation in the region is very difficult. In conversations with representatives of Israel and Palestine, I highlighted the importance of a lasting cessation of hostilities, humanitarian access Gaza and the release of all hostages, and ultimately a negotiated two-state solution. I also raised the issues of settlement expansion and settler violence in the West Bank,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.
During the trip, Ms Malmer Stenergard met with Palestine’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammad Mustafa and Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar.
Ms Malmer Stenergard also visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center, the memorial for the Nova festival at which almost 400 young people were killed and the Nir Oz kibbutz, which was devastated by Hamas’s terror attack on 7 October 2023.
Ms Malmer Stenergard also met with UN representatives, civil society representatives, the EUPOL COPPS civilian EU initiative, which supports the Palestinian Authority with legal reforms, and the EUBAM Rafah EU initiative in Gaza.
