Stockholm+50

In June 2022 it was fifty years since the first United Nations conference on the human environment took place – the 1972 Stockholm Conference. The Government of Sweden hosted a UN, high-level meeting on 2-3 June 2022 to commemorate this anniversary. The aim was to contribute to accelerating a transformation that leads to sustainable and green economies, more jobs, and a healthy planet for all, where no one is left behind.

  • Stockholm agenda shows way forward following Stockholm+50

    Some 150 countries gathered in Stockholm to focus on the climate and environment. Sweden and Kenya have now summarised the results in a Stockholm agenda – 10 recommendations to the world to accelerate the pace of the transition.

    The international climate and environment week in Stockholm is now getting under way with a series of high-level meetings, including LeadIT on industry transition, the UN Stockholm+50 conference at Stockholmsmässan and the annual Ministerial on Climate Action (MoCA). UN Secretary-General Guterres and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry are among those attending.

Background and focus of Stockholm+50

When and where

Stockholm+50 took place at the venue Stockholmsmässan in Stockholm on 2 and 3 June 2022, in conjunction with the World Environment Day on 5 June and the 50th anniversary of the Stockholm Conference. The meeting was arranged using both physical and digital platforms.

Thematic focus

Anchored in the Decade of Action, the theme of the meeting was “Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility, our opportunity.” Stockholm+50 was an occasion to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet. It set a path for us to build back after the Covid-19 pandemic and to overcome the crisis of climate change, of nature and biodiversity loss, and of pollution and waste. Three Leadership Dialogues took place during the meeting, which contributed to the outcome of Stockholm+50.

About Stockholm+50

Stockholm+50 is convened by the United Nations and is hosted by Sweden with support from the Government of Kenya. It will take place in Stockholm in June, 50 years after the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. The event will provide leaders with an opportunity to draw on 50 years of multilateral environmental action to achieve the bold and urgent action needed to secure a better future on a healthy planet.

The processes leading up to Stockholm+50

The core of the meeting, Leadership Dialogues, were expected to contribute to the outcome of Stockholm+50 by yielding clear and concrete recommendations and messages for action at all levels, mobilizing the global community behind strengthened cooperation and accelerated innovative action.

Participation in Stockholm+50

Stockholm+50 was an open forum where interested parties were invited to share their experiences and initiatives. All relevant major groups and stakeholders, including representatives from civil society and the private sector were encouraged to contribute to discussions in the lead-up to Stockholm+50.

The 1972 Stockholm Conference

The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, also known as the Stockholm Conference, was the first UN conference on the environment and was held 5-16 June 1972 in Stockholm. The meeting’s outcome document – the Stockholm Declaration – included several principles that are still important for environmental management. Another result of the meeting was the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Environment Day, held annually on 5 June.
