The Swedish Institute in Alexandria is moving

Sweden has terminated the contract with Egypt on the establishment of the Swedish Institute in Alexandria. However, dialogue activities as such will continue.
Due to practical difficulties, such as the rental agreement being terminated and limited travel links to Alexandria, the Government has decided to relocate the Institute. The plan is to move the Institute as soon as possible to another location in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Sweden’s presence through its Embassy in Cairo will not be affected by the decision. Sweden’s commitment in the Middle East and North Africa region remains steadfast, and Sweden will continue to be heavily engaged in dialogue between cultures and civilisations.
The Swedish Institute in Alexandria
The Swedish Institute in Alexandria is a Swedish mission funded by development assistance. It was established in 2000 to increase understanding between Sweden and other countries in Europe, as well as Egypt and other countries in the Middle East region. In its activities, the Institute deals with issues that are important for political, economic and social development in the region, or for relations between countries in the region and the rest of the world, or that help to increase mutual understanding within the areas of culture or religion. The Institute is not an embassy or one of the culture-oriented Swedish research institutes in the Mediterranean region.
