Speech from Anna Ekström

Speech by Minister for Upper Secondary School and Adult Education and Training Anna Ekström at Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit

Gujarat, India, 10 januari 2017

Check against delivery.

Honourable Prime Minister Modi, Heads of Government, Ministers, Honourable Chief Minister of Gujarat Rupani, Business representatives, Ladies and gentlemen.

India, and Vibrant Gujarat is the place to be if you want energy, entrepreneurship, and prospects for the future.

Make in India and Skill India initiative taken by Prime Minister Modi and the Indian Government hold a promise of transformation.

Sweden is proud to enjoy a growing partnership with the world’s largest democracy.

In the spring of 2015 we had the honour to receive President of India on a state visit Sweden. Last year in Mumbai a Joint Statement was issued by Prime Minister Modi and my Prime Minister Löfven that sets out ambitious directions for our cooperation – issues ranging from energy to environment and health, from digitalisation to defence and security.

Innovation defines our partnership – ranging fromresearch, first-class IT solutions or a state-of-the-art air force.

We are amazed by modern Indian innovation. Not least the use of the number zero (0) – one half of the binary code. Indian tech companies are investing in Sweden.

Sweden has a long tradition of internationally successful companies with innovative solutions focusing on low life-cycle costs, quality and sustainability.

180 Swedish companies are active in India and we look forward to an even deeper and widen cooperation within the India Sweden Business Leaders Round Table. Skills development is close to my heart. To keep being innovative and find new solutions to challenges we need education. Equal education is needed to fulfil everyone’s full potential.

Equal education where boys and girl meet high expectation and are given equal opportunities leads to fairness, quality and growth.

The initiatives taken by Prime Minister Modi to further increase education for women are important.

To continue, we need to embrace innovation. And embracing innovation means investing in the skills of our people and being open to new solutions.

In a world where climate change is accelerating we need equal education, innovation and new sustainable solutions to our mutual problems.

By working together, we can contribute to a safe, sustainable and fair future.

Thank you.
