Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard received Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti in Stockholm on 1 April. The purpose of the visit was to deepen cooperation, primarily in terms of trade, but also to discuss regional and global issues and challenges. Mr Ali Nafti was accompanied by a business delegation.
“Tunisia is part of the EU’s southern neighbourhood as well as a partner to NATO. We need to urgently discuss issues of mutual interest, such as the situation in the Middle East, migration and the partnership between the EU and Tunisia,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.
The discussion between the foreign ministers was centred around bilateral issues such as gender equality and migration, as well as Tunisia’s relations and cooperation with the EU. Regional and global issues, in particular Ukraine, developments in the Middle East and NATO’s southern neighbourhood were also discussed, as was the situation in Tunisia.
Tunisia was the first country with which the EU signed a Memorandum of Understanding in July 2023, covering migration, mobility, macroeconomic stability, economy and trade, the green transition and greater opportunities for exchanges between the people on both sides of the Mediterranean.
