Sweden to participate in Operation Highmast in the Indo-Pacific region

The Government has decided to contribute staff officers from the Swedish Armed Forces to Operation Highmast, a British-led multinational Carrier Strike Group deployment that will operate in the Indo-Pacific region to uphold regional security.

“It is in Sweden’s interests to enhance defence cooperation with partner countries in the Indo-Pacific region. This increases our activity and enables us to gather additional knowledge of the security dynamic in the area,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

Sweden procures new tactical transport aircraft

Sweden is investing billions in the procurement of four new tactical transport aircraft. Together with the Netherlands and Austria, Sweden is purchasing C-390 aircraft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. As Sweden is joining an existing contract, delivery times will be shortened.

“New tactical aircraft will enhance Sweden’s defence capability. Through joint procurement, we will take delivery more quickly and at a lower cost than procuring the aircraft on our own. This decision will ensure that the Swedish Armed Forces has top-quality tactical transport aircraft capability,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

SEK 25 billion to strengthen military defence; an additional SEK 16.5 billion to increased 2025 ‘Ukraine framework’; and a SEK 96 million package of targeted measures to counter hybrid threats. These are the proposals the Government will present in the forthcoming Spring Amending Budget. The Government and the Sweden Democrats have also agreed on a funding model to ensure that Sweden is able meet to a new, higher NATO spending target.

Defence Resolution 2025-2030

The most substantial reinforcement of the total defence since the Cold War is now taking place. Sweden is rapidly rearming in an international context and making major investments in both the civil and the military defence. The military defence is being allocated more than SEK 170 billion and the civil defence more than SEK 37.5 billion by 2030. Military defence expenditures will reach 2.6 per cent of GDP by 2028. A powerful Swedish total defence strengthens the security of both Sweden and NATO.
