Minister Johan Britz given temporary responsibility for climate and environment issues
Minister for Employment Johan Britz will assume responsibility for climate and environment issues in the Government while Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari is on parental leave. Meanwhile, he will retain his regular responsibility for labour market policy.

Strong engagement for financing of the nuclear energy ecosystem
On October 7, the Government held the Nordic-Baltic Nuclear Investment Summit. Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch hosted the Summit together with Finland’s Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala. Participants in the Summit included six ministers and more than 200 representatives of companies from the nuclear energy and finance sectors of four continents.

Government taking part in 2025 Session of the Nordic Council in Stockholm
‘The Nordics together – Nordic value and cohesion in troubled times’ will be the focus of discussions when the annual Session of the Nordic Council takes place in Sweden’s Riksdag on 27–30 October. Several ministers will represent the Government.

The Government proposes more possible coastal sites for new nuclear power in Sweden
Expanding nuclear power will play a crucial role in enabling Sweden to reduce its domestic climate emissions and achieve the goal of net zero emissions. The Government proposes amendments to the Swedish Environmental Code that will permit new nuclear power plants on more coastal sites. Under the proposals, protection of natural and cultural heritage will be maintained. The proposed legislative amendments are now the subject of a consultation.

New nuclear power declaration strengthens cooperation in Baltic Sea region
In connection with the International Nordic-Baltic Nuclear Investment Summit held in Stockholm on 7 October 2025, several countries endorsed a joint written statement on the significant role of nuclear power in the energy system.

Government to host international summit on new nuclear energy
On 7 October 2025, Sweden’s Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch and several ministerial colleagues will host a high-level summit on new nuclear energy in the Baltic Sea region. Finland’s Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will co-host the event.

Swedish Government to attend opening session of UN General Assembly in New York
On 21–27 September, the 80th session of the UN General Assembly is being commemorated in New York. In conjunction with the session, a high-level debate and several high-level meetings will convene. His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen will participate during the high-level week. The Government will be represented by Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari and Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed.

Legislation to enable applications for state aid for investments in new nuclear power
Sweden needs new nuclear power to cover energy needs, provide a secure supply of electricity to the national grid and carry out the energy transition. As of 1 August 2025, companies seeking to build reactors will be able to apply for state aid. The Government has now approved a new ordinance regulating the application process.

UN Ocean Conference highlights the need for more global measures to protect the world’s oceans
The UN Ocean Conference in Nice concluded on 13 June with the adoption of the Nice Ocean Action Plan, a political declaration to strengthen global efforts to protect oceans. Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari headed Sweden’s delegation.

The Swedish offer to support ambitious climate plans
2025 constitutes a critical year for climate action. All parties to the Paris Agreement will present new national climate plans, so called Nationally Determined Contributions, NDC:s, ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in November. The CEO of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Carlos Manuel Rodríguez will visit Stockholm on 1–2 April for meetings with Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa and Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari. In connection with the visit, meetings will also be held with the Riksdag’s Committee on Environment and Agriculture, the business sector, universities, civil society organisations and representatives of public authorities.

New climate finance goal adopted at COP29
After long negotiations, the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 concluded on 24 November 2024 with a decision on a New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG). The NCQG encompasses USD 300 billion annually. However, decisions on other negotiating points were postponed to next year’s COP30 in Brazil.

Global negotiations on an agreement to end plastic pollution are entering their final stage
The fifth and final session of the International Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including the marine environment, begins today, November 25 in Busan, South Korea. It is important to regulate plastic pollution on a global level to reduce pollution and climate impact, protect the oceans, nature, and biodiversity.

Sweden’s COP29 financial package
Sweden is and will remain one of the world’s most generous donors of international climate finance. Swedish climate aid will be expanded and streamlined. With its substantial contribution in 2022, Sweden played a significant role in achieving the goal of USD 100 billion per year in global climate finance. Sweden’s contribution to international climate finance is at the core of its climate policy. International climate finance will contribute to both emissions reductions and climate adaptation.
