The Government’s overarching objective for intellectual property (IP) is to strengthen Sweden’s innovative capacity and competitiveness and to promote and secure a rich cultural offering, both nationally and globally. Strategic management and protection of IP assets using IP law is particularly important at a time when the global race for strategic technology gains is playing out against a backdrop of geopolitical turbulence.

Government approves support to cultural heritage preservation in Ukraine
The Government has decided on new support totalling SEK 12 million for initiatives preserving the cultural heritage of Ukraine through UNESCO for 2026–2027. The support will ensure the protection and long-term preservation of cultural heritage sites threatened by the war.

Task force for Jewish life in Sweden has meeting at Swedish Police Authority
The Government’s task force for Jewish life in Sweden gathered for its first meeting of the year on 30 January. On this occasion, it was held at the Swedish Police Authority’s premises in Kungsholmen, Stockholm. The meeting was attended by Minister for Justice Gunnar Strömmer, National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh and representatives of the Swedish Institute for Human Rights and the National Agency for Education.

Government seeks to highlight civilian action along Swedish-Norwegian border during the Holocaust
In connection with Holocaust Remembrance Day on 27 January 2026, the Government decided to task the Living History Forum with highlighting civilian action along the Swedish-Norwegian border to assist those escaping Norway to Sweden during the Holocaust. The assignment will draw attention to traces of the Holocaust as part of the Swedish-Jewish cultural heritage.

2026 Society and Defence Annual National Conference
On 11–13 January, the Swedish Government took part in the Society and Defence Annual Conference in Sälen. 2026 marks 80 years since the first conference was held, and the theme for 2026 was ‘Resolve and delivery’. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson opened the conference with a speech and Gunnar Strömmer, Minister for Justice, Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Pål Jonson, Minister for Defence and Carl-Oskar Bohlin, Minister for Civil Defence, also spoke. The Minister for Energy, Business and Industry, Ebba Busch, also attended the conference.

Jewish culture is an integral part of Swedish culture, and Jewish history in Sweden is an essential thread in the fabric of our shared cultural heritage. It should be self-evident that Jews in Sweden can wear their Star of David or kippah openly and with pride. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

The first meeting of the year for the Government’s task force for Jewish life was held at the Jewish Museum in Stockholm at the beginning of March. The group’s focus area this year is Jewish life, which coincides with celebrations marking 250 years of established Jewish life in Sweden. The group will also continue to focus on security.
