The Ministry of Finance is responsible for issues concerning central government finances, including coordination of the central government budget, forecasts and analyses, tax issues, and management and administration of central government activities. The Ministry is also responsible for matters concerning financial markets, consumer legislation, state-owned enterprises and digital policy.

The 2026 Spring Budget in five minutes

On 13 April, the Government presented its Spring Budget. In an uncertain international situation, Sweden continues to stand strong with an economy that is trending upward. The budget includes measures worth SEK 7.7 billion in 2026 and focuses on building a stronger and more secure Sweden.

New nuclear power is an investment in society that requires the state to assume a new role

New nuclear power is a long-term undertaking for society. It requires investments from both the private sector and the state. In the Spring Amending Budget for 2026, the Government proposes state majority ownership of Videberg Kraft AB and that the state assumes a role in the financing of the future system for radioactive waste management and spent nuclear fuel by reducing risk for those who make the initial investments. Those who produce the waste should also continue to be responsible for their share of the costs.

Diminished growth prospects in wake of war but recovery expected to continue

The Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have driven up global energy prices and weakened growth prospects in Sweden and worldwide. The ongoing recovery of the Swedish economy is expected to continue, albeit at a slower pace than projected in the Spring Fiscal Policy Bill for 2026. Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson has presented an updated forecast for economic development in Sweden.

Swedish economy recovering despite considerable global uncertainty

There is currently a great deal of uncertainty in the world, particularly due to the war in the Middle East and its consequences. Nevertheless, the Swedish economic recovery that began in 2025 is expected to continue in 2026. Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson has presented a new economic forecast.

Sweden’s first comprehensive AI strategy aims for top-10 ranking

Sweden aims to take a leading role in artificial intelligence. The Government is now presenting a new AI strategy with the aim of providing more effective government agencies, clearer rules for businesses and better conditions for research. The objective is for Sweden to be among the world’s top 10 countries in the field of AI.
