New AP fund Chairs appointed

Published

The Government has appointed new Chairs of the AP2, AP3 and AP7 funds and a new vice chairman of AP7.

Niklas Johansson was appointed as the new Chair of AP2, taking his post on 28 May. Mr Johansson has extensive experience as a member of various boards and from a number of leadership positions in the financial sector, including in asset management for the Skandia group. He replaced Ingrid Albinsson, who served as the Acting Chair from 5 February and remains on the Board of Directors as Vice Chair.

Magdalena Wahlqvist Alveskog will take her post as new Chair of the AP3 fund on 1 September. Ms Wahlqvist Alveskog has long worked for the Handelsbanken group, where she has held several leadership positions in asset management, most recently as CEO of Handelsbanken Fonder AB. She will replace Christina Lindenius, who will leave the Board of Directors after nine years. Johan Bygge, Deputy Chair of the AP3 fund, has been appointed Acting Chair until 31 August.

Hans Lindberg, CEO of Finance Sweden, will become the new Chair of the AP7 fund. His background includes serving as Director-General of what was then known as the National Financial Management Authority. AP7’s new Vice Chair will be Henrik Saxborn, who has been a Member of the Board since 2022. They both took their posts on 28 May, replacing Per Frennberg and Emma Ihre, respectively, who left AP7’s Board after eight years.

“The task of the AP funds is to contribute to the Swedish people’s pensions, which means serving on the Board of Directors is a position of great responsibility. We’ve set out stricter requirements for the expertise of board members, which creates conditions for more effective governance and management of Swedes’ pension funds,” says Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman.

Background

There are a total of 36 members of the four AP Funds’ Boards of Directors, including four Chairs and four Vice Chairs. The board members are appointed for one year at a time and should normally not hold their position for longer than eight years. The law states that four Members of the Board of each buffer fund (the AP2, AP3 and AP4 Funds) must be appointed following proposals from employee and employer organisations.

At the beginning of 2026, the number of buffer funds decreased from five to three. AP1’s assets were then transferred to AP3 and AP4 funds. AP6 was integrated into the buffer fund system by transferring its assets to the AP2 fund.
