  • Sweden to sell Gripen E/F fighter aircraft to Ukraine

    On Thursday 28 May, Ukraine announced its intention to purchase 20 Gripen E/F aircraft as a first step following the Letter of Intent signed by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 22 October 2025. In conjunction with the sale, Sweden will donate up to 16 JAS 39 Gripen C/D aircraft from the Swedish Armed Forces’ current fleet, together with advanced ammunition.

  • Decision on negotiations with France on Luleå-class frigates for air defence role

    The Government has recently tasked the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration with initiating negotiations on the procurement of four frigates based on the FDI concept (Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention) from France’s Naval Group. The four frigates, which will be part of Sweden’s Luleå class programme, are scheduled for delivery between 2030 and 2034.

The most substantial reinforcement of the total defence since the Cold War is now taking place. Sweden is rapidly rearming in an international context and making major investments in both the civil and the military defence. A powerful Swedish total defence strengthens the security of both Sweden and NATO.

Defence Innovation

In the first half of 2023, the Swedish Government launched the defence innovation initiative to increase the capacity and pace of innovation in the defence industry. This initiative should create added value through increased and enhanced collaboration within and between the business sector and government agencies in various sectors. The purpose is to strengthen Sweden’s security and national defence capability and boost competitiveness in the defence industry.

Military support to Ukraine

Sweden has contributed military support to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. There has been a significant change in the level and content of the support provided by Sweden: from personal protective equipment in the first decision to tanks, advanced weapons systems and ammunition in later packages. With the support package presented by the Government on 19 February 2026, the total value of Sweden’s military support to Ukraine amounts to approximately SEK 128 billion.

Sweden in NATO

All NATO member countries have now approved Sweden’s application for membership. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is in Washington DC to deposit Sweden’s instrument of accession. The Government is holding an extraordinary government meeting this afternoon to approve Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty. Afterwards, Mr Kristersson will deposit Sweden’s instrument of Accession with the Government of the United States. Sweden will then be a member of NATO and fully participating Ally.
