A Spring Budget to strengthen and protect Sweden’s economy
Published
Today, the 2026 Spring Budget was presented to the Riksdag. In a trying and unpredictable international situation, Sweden stands strong, and the Swedish economy has begun to recover. The Government is continuing to build a stronger and more secure Sweden. The Spring Budget includes measures worth SEK 7.7 billion for 2026.
“Sweden is on the right track. In spite of war and international uncertainty, the Swedish economy is strong, and we are continuing to fortify it. For the recovery to gain momentum here at home, we need to instil confidence in the future among Sweden’s hard-working people,” says Minister for Finance Elisabeth Svantesson.
The Government is now building a stronger and more secure Sweden in a turbulent world. This year’s Spring Budget contains proposals worth SEK 7.7 billion 2026. This amount includes proposals in the Spring Amending Budget Bill for 2026, as well as proposals on temporarily lowered taxes on fuel, and electricity and gas subsidies that the Government plans to present today in an additional amending budget.
Support to households in response to increased energy prices
The budget includes support to families and hard-working people in response to increased fuel and energy prices through measures such as:
- a temporary reduction of taxes on petrol and diesel, and
- new temporary electricity and gas subsidies.
To reduce oil dependence and greenhouse gas emissions, the Government proposes an investment to increase government agency purchasing of fossil-free fuels or electric alternatives in 2026. The Government’s proposed measures are expected to reduce overall emissions in 2026.
Continued reinforcement of Sweden’s total defence
The Government proposes several measures to strengthen Sweden’s total defence. Funds are being set aside for the following purposes:
- preparatory measures in the railway network and the construction of a reserve port on Gotland, and
- establishing a new government agency for Sweden’s foreign intelligence.
A reliable welfare system
To strengthen Sweden’s welfare system, the Government’s proposals include the following:
- a grant to the regions to maintain health care staff and capacity in the summer months,
- support that will enable the number of publicly financed in vitro fertilisation procedures to double,
- a vaccine package for older people,
- investments in schools, such as language-learning breakfasts and additional funding for homework support and purchasing of books, and
- initiatives to combat men’s violence against women.
Continued overhaul of criminal policy
One of the Government’s top priorities is to forcefully push back against organised crime. During this electoral period, Swedish law enforcement authorities have been given more resources and more effective tools, which places greater demands on results. The Government now proposes additional funding to boost the Swedish Police Authority’s technological capabilities.
These proposals are based on an agreement between the Government and the Sweden Democrats.
