On 23 April, Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard received Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Ahmed Attaf in Stockholm. The purpose of the visit was to deepen cooperation between the two countries, primarily in terms of trade, and also to discuss security challenges in the region.
“Algeria is Africa’s third-largest economy, and therefore an important regional actor and partner to the EU within the framework of the Southern Neighbourhood Policy. We need to urgently discuss issues of mutual interest, such as bilateral trade, the situation in the Middle East and relations between the EU and Algeria,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.
The foreign ministers discussed issues such as the potential for more trade and investment between Sweden and Algeria, not least through the green transition. Regional and global issues discussed included Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, developments in the Middle East and the situation in the Sahel. Other discussion topics included counteracting terrorism and international crime.
Algeria is actively working in its role as a member of the UN Security Council (2024–2025). The country’s geopolitical importance to Europe as an energy supplier, particularly of fossil fuels, has increased as a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Algeria is striving towards a more diversified economy that is less dependent on fossil fuels.
