The main task of the Swedish Armed Forces is to defend Sweden against an armed attack. The Swedish Armed Forces maintain and develop Sweden’s military defence, and the agency’s tasks include promoting Sweden’s security and asserting Sweden’s territorial integrity.

The agency must promote Sweden’s security, assert Sweden’s territorial integrity and have the capacity to safeguard Sweden’s sovereign rights and Swedish interests, as well as prevent and manage conflicts and wars both domestically and internationally. The Swedish Armed Forces also conduct operations, take part in international peace support operations, provide support to civilian operations and carry out other tasks that contribute to the Riksdag’s objectives for the total defence and the military defence.
