Aims of the cooperation
Published
The aim of the defence cooperation between Sweden and Finland is to enhance defence capabilities, enable joint operations and promote shared defence interests, including strengthening security in the Baltic Sea region.
The cooperation is based on trust and a long history of collaboration between the countries. It comprises areas such as operational planning and preparations to be able to jointly use civil and military resources in various scenarios. Examples of this include asserting territorial integrity and exercising the right to collective self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Once the necessary political decisions have been taken, the countries can act jointly. By allowing greater leeway to take joint action, the threshold for incidents and conflicts is raised.
