Military defence objective
The objective of military defence is to have the capability to:
- defend Sweden against armed attack;
- assert Sweden’s territorial integrity, and safeguard sovereign rights and national interests in Sweden and outside Swedish territory in accordance with international law;
- promote our security, and prevent and manage conflicts and war by carrying out peacetime operations on our own territory and in our neighbourhood, and take part in international peace support operations; and
- protect society and its ability to function by using existing capabilities and resources to assist the rest of society in both peacetime and times of heightened alert.
New objective 1 January 2025
On 17 December 2024, the Riksdag adopted a new objective for the military defence. The new objective will enter into force on 1 January 2025.
The objective of the military defence will be to have the capability to:
- defend Sweden against armed attacks;
- assert Sweden’s territorial integrity;
- protect rights and national interests beyond Sweden’s borders in accordance with international law;
- fulfil Sweden’s commitments as a NATO member within the framework of NATO’s collective defence and other duties;
- promote our security, and prevent and manage conflicts and war by carrying out peacetime operations on our own territory and in our neighbourhood, and take part in international peace-promoting operations; and
- protect society and its functionality by providing assistance using existing capabilities and resources during peace and a heightened state of alert.
