State Visit from Denmark – programme and media accreditation

The King and Queen of Denmark will pay a State Visit to Sweden on 6–7 May 2024 at the invitation of His Majesty The King.
It will be King Frederik X’s first State Visit following his accession to the throne in January, and the first incoming State Visit from Denmark since 1985. The King and Queen of Denmark will be accompanied by Vice-prime Minister and Minister of Defence Troels Lund Poulsen, Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov and Minister for Taxation Jeppe Bruus.
The State Visit is an occasion to solidify and promote the very good and longstanding relations between Sweden and Denmark. The overall purpose is to further strengthen and develop relations and cooperation in areas such as foreign, security and defence policy, and innovation and research. The State Visit is also an opportunity to strengthen ties between the Swedish and Danish people.
Sweden’s Government will be represented during the Visit by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström, Minister for Schools Lotta Edholm, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson, Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall and Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand.

Monday 6 May
Morning
Official welcome ceremony
For the first time in several decades, the Royal Barge, Vasaorden, receives a visiting Head of State in Stockholm. The Danish King and Queen sail into Stockholm aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog. After mooring, the Danish guests board Vasaorden for departure to Skeppsbron together with The Crown Princess and Prince Daniel. As the Vasaorden is rowed towards its destination, the Danish guests are saluted by cannons from Kastellholmen and Skeppsholmen.
The Swedish King and Queen receive the new Danish King and Queen on Skeppsbron below the Royal Palace. The Swedish King and the Danish King inspect a company of grenadiers from the Life Guards on Skeppsbron, after which the Royal guests will greet representatives of the Riksdag, the Government and official representatives of Sweden in the Hall of State in the Royal Palace. At the same time, the Swedish King and Queen greet the Danish delegation.
The general public is welcome to attend this historic ceremony and the welcoming of the Danish King and Queen. Spectator areas can be reached from the Old Town (Slottsbacken/Skeppsbron) and from Kungsträdgården (Strömbron).
Following the welcoming ceremony, the Danish King and the Swedish King give press statements in Queen Lovisa Ulrika’s Dining Hall in the presence of the Danish Queen and the Swedish Queen.
Luncheon
The King and Queen host a luncheon at the Royal Palace for their guests.
Accompanying ministers and representatives from the Danish delegation attend a luncheon hosted by Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Meeting with the Speaker of the Riksdag
The Danish King and Queen are received by Speaker of the Riksdag Andreas Norlén at the Riksdag.

Meeting with the Prime Minister
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson receives the Danish King and Queen at Rosenbad for discussions.
Royal Institute of Technology
The afternoon programme concludes with a visit to the Royal Institute of Technology. The King and Queen and the Danish King and Queen meet Swedish astronauts Christer Fuglesang and Marcus Wandt, and Danish astronaut Andreas Mogensen to discuss the role of space exploration and technology for a sustainable future. Minister for Schools Lotta Edholm and Denmark’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen are in attendance. Royal Institute of Technology President Anders Söderholm welcomes them. Following speeches by Ms Edholm and Mr Løkke Rasmussen, a panel discussion held with the astronauts is moderated by Hannes Eder Öhrström. The theme of the discussion is ‘Space Technology as a Driver for Sustainable Transformation’.

In the evening, The King and Queen host a banquet at the Royal Palace in honour of their Danish guests.

Stockholm Marine Regiment
The Danish King and the Swedish King visit Stockholm Marine Regiment, accompanied by Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Danish Minister of Defence Lund Poulsen. Chief of Navy Ewa Skoog Haslum receives the visitors and provides an overview of the operations. This is followed by a demonstration of Swedish naval units and Combat Boat 90. The visitors are also given a demonstration of maritime forces and the opportunity to speak with combat divers.

Waldemarsudde
The Danish Queen and the Swedish Queen visit Prins Eugen’s Waldemarsudde, where they are welcomed by Museum Director Karin Sidén. Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand is in attendance. Following a presentation of Waldemarsudde and a short tour, they visit the Marie Krøyer exhibition.

Lunch at Stockholm City Hall
The City of Stockholm provides a lunch hosted by the Chair of Stockholm City Council Olle Burell and Mayor of Stockholm Karin Wanngård. Attending the lunch are the Danish King and Queen, the Swedish King and Queen, the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, and guests invited by the City.

Forskaren
The Danish King and Queen and the Swedish King and Queen visit Forskaren, a newly constructed building in Hagastaden designed as a hub for knowledge exchange and cooperation between world-leading actors in the field of life sciences. Sweden’s Government is represented by Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Bush and Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström. Denmark’s Government is represented by Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov and Minister for Taxation Jeppe Bruus. Following a panel discussion, on the development of tomorrow's life sciences, AI's role and opportunities for increased Nordic cooperation, moderated by Jenni Nordberg, head of international relations at the Swedish Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry, Forskaren is officially inaugurated by the two Heads of State. The visit by the Danish King and Queen and the Swedish King and Queen concludes with a presentation on, and tasting of, future sustainable food production by Åsa Domeij, Head of Sustainability at Axfood.

The afternoon’s programme concludes with a visit to Nordiska museet. The Danish King and Queen, the Swedish King and Queen and the Crown Princess and Prince Daniel are welcomed by museum director Sanne Houby-Nielsen. Minister for Culture Parisa Liljestrand is in attendance and delivers a speech, followed by a musical performance by Danmarks Radios Pigekor. This is followed by a presentation of parts of the Nordbor exhibition. The visit concludes with the Danish King and Queen planting an apple tree (Gråsten variety) at the museum during a performance by Danmarks Radios Pigekor.

Reciprocal reception
In the evening, the King and Queen of Denmark hold a reception in honour of their Swedish hosts aboard the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.
Farewell ceremony
The State Visit concludes with the Swedish King and Queen bid farewell to the Danish King and Queen at a fare farewell ceremony at the Royal Palace.
