Sweden procures new tactical transport aircraft

Published

Sweden is investing billions in the procurement of four new tactical transport aircraft. Together with the Netherlands and Austria, Sweden is purchasing C-390 aircraft from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer. As Sweden is joining an existing contract, delivery times will be shortened.

The purchase was made public in connection with State Secretary to the Minister for Defence Peter Sandwall’s visit to the LAAD Defence and Security trade fair in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on 1 April.

“New tactical aircraft will enhance Sweden’s defence capability. Through joint procurement, we will take delivery more quickly and at a lower cost than procuring the aircraft on our own. This decision will ensure that the Swedish Armed Forces has top-quality tactical transport aircraft capability,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.

Sweden has committed to procure four C-390 transport aircraft that will be based in Sweden. This procurement will be more affordable with delivery taking place much quicker through joint procurement with the Netherlands and Austria, which are purchasing the same type of aircraft.

The procurement will be implemented by the Netherlands acting as agent and representative for the other countries, based on an agreement made on 28 March 2025 between the Netherlands, Austria and Sweden, via the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration.

Final negotiations between the Netherlands and Embraer on the aircraft delivery date are ongoing. Sweden’s agreement with the Netherlands and Austria ensures that Sweden’s new aircraft will be given priority in the production process. The final assembly of the new aircraft will take place in Embraer’s production facility outside São Paolo, Brazil.

Tactical transport aircraft

There is increasing demand for transport aircraft throughout Europe. Sweden is purchasing these aircraft to enable the Swedish Armed Forces to transport both staff and materiel, which is a key prerequisite for carrying out international military operations and evacuation operations.

The current Swedish TP 84 (C-130H) tactical transport aircraft are nearing their technical life expectancy and need to be replaced. The first TP 84 aircraft were purchased in the 1960s.
