Enhanced Sweden-Germany cooperation

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Germany’s Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz have signed an enhanced and expanded Strategic Innovation Partnership between Sweden and Germany. The Joint Declaration of Intent comprises new areas including foreign policy, capital market issues, migration and international development cooperation.
“Germany is one of our closest Allies and partners. With this expanded agreement, our countries will strengthen cooperation on foreign policy, security and defence, capital markets, international development cooperation and migration. This is in addition to our joint activities on green and digital transition. Together, we are making our countries safer and more prosperous, and our region more secure,” says Mr Kristersson.
The Strategic Innovation Partnership between Sweden and Germany was concluded in 2017 and renewed in 2019 and 2025. Alongside new areas comprising foreign policy, capital market issues, migration and international development cooperation, the partnership includes security and defence, space, energy transition and mobility, AI and digitalisation (including eHealth) and innovation for small and medium-sized enterprises.
The enhanced and expanded Partnership was signed by Mr Kristersson and Mr Merz in connection with a meeting in Berlin on 19 November. A joint press conference was held after the meeting and is available to view on the German Federal Government website.
