Press release from Ministry of Defence

Pål Jonson to take part in EU Foreign Affairs Council defence minister configuration

Published

On 1 December, EU defence ministers will meet within the framework of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. Continued support to Ukraine and defence readiness are on the agenda for the meeting, where Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will represent Sweden.

The defence ministers are expected to discuss the EU’s continued support to Ukraine. The discussions are anticipated to centre on the options for new financial support to Ukraine, which the European Commission was invited to present by the EU heads of state and government at the European Council on 23 October 2025. Discussions will also likely touch on defence industry cooperation between the EU and Ukraine, and other ways to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capability.

During the meeting, the defence ministers are also expected to discuss European defence readiness. The focus will likely be on measures to remedy critical capability gaps, how to develop the European Defence Agency role in supporting Member States to strengthen their defence capabilities, and defence industry measures to improve defence readiness.

“The Government welcomes the work that is underway to strengthen European defence readiness. This work in the EU will also help strengthen NATO. It is also essential that we make progress on the question of how to use Russian assets to support Ukraine. The support must be ambitious and based on Ukraine’s needs,” says Mr Jonson ahead of the meeting.
