The Government has adopted a new national action plan for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolutions on women, peace and security. This is Sweden's third action plan for women, peace and security, and it covers the period 2016–2020. With this new action plan, the Government wants to move forward and give feminist foreign policy concrete form by strengthening women as actors for peace and security.

To ensure that the action plan is based on the conditions and needs in countries affected by conflict, consultations have been carried out in five conflict and post-conflict countries. The action plan also identifies twelve priority countries for implementation, enabling context-specific activities and strong partnerships.

Under the leadership of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, a reference group consisting of representatives of Swedish government agencies and civil society organisations has been involved in drawing up the action plan and will continue to contribute to its implementation and follow-up.

The thematic focus of the action plan is women's influence and meaningful participation in peace processes, conflict prevention, better protection from violence and integrating a gender perspective into all work for peace and security.
