Public mental health is a priority area for the Government. The Government’s ambition is to ensure strong preventive measures against mental ill health and the promotion of good mental health. The number of suicides must decrease and the health, medical and social care of people with mental health problems needs to be more accessible and equitable.

    Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed visited New York to take part in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Mr Forssmed delivered Sweden’s national address at the High-Level Meeting on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the Promotion of Mental Health. He also participated in a number of side events linked to promotion of mental health and well-being.

    Dementia is one of the major public health issues of our time. The number of people living with a dementia diagnosis is increasing. At the same time research in the field is advancing rapidly. Therefore the Government has adopted an updated national dementia strategy to improve health and social care for people with dementia.
