On 28–29 May, Canada’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly visited Stockholm at the invitation of Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström. The visit took place in the light of Sweden’s NATO membership and preparations ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in Washington DC in July.

Sweden and Canada have long enjoyed excellent relations that are now further enhanced by virtue of Sweden’s NATO membership and the altered international situation.

The agenda included priority issues within NATO, the importance of continued support to Ukraine, the Arctic and developments in the Middle East. Ms Joly and Mr Billström also discussed the planned Swedish military contribution to NATO’s advanced presence in Latvia, which is under Canadian direction.

Ms Joly and Mr Billström also participated in a round-table discussion at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs, which focused on security policy.
