An international context of rising geopolitical tensions and intensifying competition places greater demands on both the Swedish business sector and on policy. To strengthen its position internationally, Sweden must mobilise its efforts. We must harness the major business opportunities being created by the green and digital transition globally. To this end, we are reinforcing the synergies between development cooperation, promotion and trade policy.

The foreign trade policy is a toolbox to guide this work. Its strength lies in its broad ownership, spanning all ministries and relevant government agencies. The strategy comprises three overall objectives and around 70 concrete interim objectives and activities. The aim is to achieve the objectives by 2030, with an initial evaluation taking place in 2026.

  • A concerted approach to intellectual property will strengthen Swedish innovative capacity and competitiveness

The Government has presented its publication ‘A concerted approach to intellectual property’. This is part of the Government’s effort to strengthen Sweden’s innovative capacity and competitiveness and to promote and secure a rich cultural offering, both nationally and globally.

Interim objectives and measures

The foreign trade strategy takes a concerted approach to several necessary measures to strengthen Sweden’s and Swedish companies’ competitiveness, investments and exports. In addition to objectives on exports and investments, the strategy includes important interim objectives on innovation, research and development, skills supply, green and digital transition, the image of Sweden, new financing solutions and synergies between development cooperation, promotion and trade policy.
