Paulina Brandberg participating in annual UN Commission on the Status of Women

Minister for Gender Equality and Working Life Paulina Brandberg is taking part in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) on 10–14 March. This year also marks 30 years since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and the main focus of the this year’s session will be to review and evaluate its implementation.

Paulina Brandberg is leading a delegation from Sweden that includes 30 representatives from government agencies, civil society, the Riksdag and the Government. This year, the session focuses on a review of the Platform for Action, which is a global framework for achieving the UN’s goals on gender equality, development and peace.

This will be a record year for the event, with a total of 12 000 participants expected to attend, up from around 8 500 in 2024. Almost 700 parallel meetings are due to take place. With Sweden´s presidency of the UN Women Executive Board, Sweden has received a record number of invitations and meeting requests.

Three main priorities

In the past five years, three priorities have been especially prominent in UN Member State’s national reporting and follow-up:
· ending of violence against women;
· securing gender equality and freedom from discrimination in law and judicial systems;
· good quality education and life-long learning for women and girls.

At the CSW session this year, Paulina Brandberg will deliver Sweden’s policy speech and speak on the Nordic Ministers’ Panel, Pushing for Progress, held on 10 March between 13:15 and 14:30. Paulina Brandberg will also participate in a Swedish-Moldovan side event on institutional mechanisms to stop men’s violence against women and girls on 12 March, at 14:45 to 16:00.

The UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The session on women’s rights and gender equality is held annually in March in New York and is the second-largest of the UN system. This year’s session, CSW69/Beijing+30, is taking place on 10-21 March 2025.

UN Member States meet annually at the CSW to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify new challenges and formulate new policy initiatives. Mutually agreed findings on the main theme are also negotiated, with debates, hundreds of side events and bilateral meetings also taking place.
