Minister for Civil Defence to visit Japan

On 20–22 October, Minister for Civil Defence Carl-Oskar Bohlin will visit Tokyo, Japan. He will hold bilateral meetings to learn from Tokyo’s experience of preparing for and managing major crises such as earthquakes, and take part in a conference on international support for mine action projects in Ukraine.

Mr Bohlin will visit local authorities and rescue services in Tokyo to exchange experiences of working with civil defence and crisis preparedness. Mr Bohlin will also hold bilateral meetings at Japan’s Ministry of Defense.

On 22 October, Mr Bohlin will take part in the 2025 Ukraine Mine Action Conference, where he will deliver a speech on Sweden’s extensive support to Ukraine in the area of mine action.

Defence cooperation with Japan

Sweden and Japan have enjoyed diplomatic relations for over 150 years and also have a long history of defence-related cooperation.

In December 2022, Sweden’s Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Japan’s Ambassador to Sweden H.E. Noke Maskaki signed a comprehensive agreement on defence between the two countries.

Japan’s Minister of Defense Minoru Kihara visited Sweden in July 2024.
