Speech by Ebba Busch

Intensive negotiations on the European Grids Package.

Published

Statement by Sweden’s Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, 10 april, Stockholm.

This is the worst energy crisis in modern history. Worse than 1973 oil crisis, worse than 1979 oil crisis, and worse than the 2022 energy crisis in Europe – combined.

Even with a two-week ceasefire, even with a permanent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, energy flows will not normalise overnight. Markets take time. Systems take time.

And households and companies are already feeling the pressure. That is why we welcome that the EU is acting. We support swift, targeted measures to stabilise energy markets and protect European economies.

We also welcome the European Council’s conclusions on a more flexible use of congestion revenues – recognising that national circumstances matter.

But, this flexibility must be real, and it must be reflected in the Grids Package. And it must remain voluntary – allowing Member States to act in the best interest of their own consumers.

Because if flexibility is missing, we will take necessary actions to protect Swedish households, Swedish companies, and Sweden’s energy security.

And frankly speaking, I am astonished that this is even a discussion when all our focus should be on strengthening energy sovereignty. And therefore I also expect a swift resolution to this issue.

We know that we are pushing for an energy policy that would be a win for the whole of Europe.
