It is gratifying that Private Travis King was able to return to the United States and that Sweden has been able to assist in accordance with its responsibilities as protecting power for the US in North Korea.
Sweden serves as the protective power for the USA in the DPRK since 1995. The Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang provide consular assistance to US Nationals in the DPRK.
Sweden has acted within the role of our protective agreement for the USA in the DPRK. We have done so in accordance with the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular relations.
