16. Health care

Some of the major hospitals (sjukhus) in Stockholm administered by the Region Stockholm include: Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm South General Hospital (Södersjukhuset), Danderyd Hospital, St. Erik Hospital, Norrtälje Hospital, and Södertälje Hospital.

A distinction is made between primary and specialist care. Primary care is provided by local health centres (vårdcentraler) and by hospitals. A letter of referral from a doctor in the primary care sector is required in order to obtain more advanced specialist treatment.
