20.1 Bank services
Proof of identity and an address are required to open a bank account and obtain a bank card. The account holder's address does not have to be Swedish and can be a 'care of' address. Some banks also require a reference from a bank where the person previously has been a customer.
Some banks require a personal identity number (for individuals) or an organisation registration number (for embassies and other international entities). Organisation registration numbera are issued by the Swedish Tax Agency. If the bank account is intended for the Embassy, only authorised embassy staff may sign.
Banks in Sweden are private undertakings and make their own commercial decisions. We recommend diplomats to be in close contact with several banks.
Also, banks in Sweden are required to monitor and assess international transactions in accordance with applicable legislation, including sanctions regulations and anti-money laundering frameworks. As a result, transfers to certain countries may be subject to delays or restrictions.
