3.6 Increasing the size of the mission

According to article 11 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and article 20 of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, the receiving state may require that the size of a mission or a consular post be kept within limits considered by it to be reasonable and normal, having regard to circumstances and conditions in the receiving state and to the needs of the particular mission or consular post.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs kindly requests that when the number of staff at a mission or consular post is intended to be increased, the Protocol Department of the Ministry is informed of this through a note verbale with an explanation regarding the reason for the increase as well as information on which category the staff member will belong to and what his or her main tasks will be.

The Ministry will then review the information and inform the concerned mission or consular post about whether it can give its approval or not through a note verbale.

This process should be completed before the new staff member takes measures for his or her arrival to Sweden, e.g. before an application for visa is submitted.
