Sweden’s work against antimicrobial resistance

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) – particularly antibiotic resistance – has long been an important issue for Sweden, and action is being taken to prevent the spread of AMR and its effects both in Sweden and globally.

    On 26 September, a High-level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was held during the United Nations General Assembly. The Meeting is the second of its type, with the first having been held in 2016. The meeting included the ceremonial adoption of a political declaration on global and national undertakings in efforts to counter AMR. Minister for Health Care Acko Ankarberg Johansson headed Sweden’s participation in the Meeting.

  • Swedish Strategy to Combat Antibiotic Resistance 2024-2025

    This strategy is intended to form the basis of Swedish efforts to curb the development and spread of antibiotic resistance and to prevent and manage its consequences. Swedish efforts to combat antibiotic resistance at the national, EU and international levels need to be long-term and sustainable and be based on effective initiatives in all relevant areas.

    Sweden should continue to show leadership in international efforts, in line with the Swedish Policy for Global Development, global commitments made under the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and EU activities.

    Minister for Social Affairs and Public Health Jakob Forssmed has been appointed member of the Global Leaders Group (GLG) on Antimicrobial Resistance. The GLG comprises world leaders and experts working together to accelerate action on antimicrobial resistance.
