Press release from Ministry for Foreign Affairs

State Visit from Iceland

Published

On 6–8 May 2025, Iceland’s President Halla Tómasdóttir will pay a State Visit to Sweden at the invitation of His Majesty The King. Ms Tómasdóttir will be accompanied by her husband, Björn Skúlason, and representatives of the Icelandic Government and business sector. The Swedish Government will be represented by several ministers.

The State Visit will reaffirm the excellent bilateral relations between Sweden and Iceland and highlight the strong historical ties between the two nations. Our countries have been closely linked for more than a thousand years. Today, we are not only friends, neighbours and partners; we are also Allies.

Sweden’s accession to NATO has further deepened our bilateral relations and our sense of Nordic community. Together, we are working to strengthen our collective defence capabilities and crisis preparedness. The State Visit will be an opportunity to develop the cooperation between Sweden and Iceland with a view to strengthening the resilience of our societies.

The State Visit will also offer possibilities to develop and highlight the long tradition of cooperation between Sweden and Iceland on innovation and research and between the two countries’ business sectors. Through closer cooperation – in areas such as green transition, life sciences and health and medical care – we can enhance our competitiveness and meet the challenges of the future.

Our cultural affinity is manifested in extensive exchange in the areas of literature, music, film and design. The State Visit will provide an opportunity to deepen this kinship and further develop cooperation in the cultural and creative industries.

More detailed information about the programme and participants will be published nearer the time of the visit.
