Minister for Defence Pål Jonson to take part in EU Foreign Affairs Council defence minister configuration

Published

On 20 May, EU defence ministers will meet in Brussels within the framework of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. The meeting will focus on continued EU support to Ukraine and strengthening EU defence readiness and preparedness. Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will represent Sweden at the meeting.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas will inform the EU defence ministers of current security and defence policy developments.

The defence ministers will then discuss EU military support to Ukraine. The discussion is expected to focus on enhancing this support. The defence ministers are expected to address the need for increased military support to Ukraine, strengthening the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) and the importance of increased defence industry cooperation with Ukraine.

EU defence capability and implementation of the White Paper for European Defence – Readiness 2030 are also on the agenda. This discussion is expected to focus on efforts to manage identified capability gaps. The defence ministers are also expected to consider the various financing options previously communicated within the framework of the ReArm Europe financing plan, including the proposal for a Council regulation establishing the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) through the reinforcement of European defence industry Instrument.
