Sweden and Denmark adopt declaration marking 25th anniversary of the Öresund Bridge

Published

Today, 1 July 2025, marks the 25th anniversary of the Öresund Bridge. Sweden and Denmark are close to each other in terms of culture, values and common objectives – and their cooperation has never been closer than it is now. To mark the anniversary, Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen adopted a declaration with the objective of making the Öresund region safer and more competitive and simplifying living and working across the border.

”Together with my Danish counterpart, we have today adopted a joint declaration with the aim of making the Öresund region safer, more competitive, and easier to live and work in across the border. This is a further step in bringing our countries closer together. I also look forward to close cooperation with Denmark during the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU that starts today,” says Mr Kristersson.

Declaration between Sweden and Denmark

Sweden has close and good relations with Denmark, and the countries cooperate closely in many international and regional forums, including the EU, NATO, the UN, the Nordic Council of Ministers and Nordic-Baltic cooperation.

One particular strength of Swedish-Danish cooperation is a common approach to many of the challenges the countries face. There is a common vision for both countries to be safe, economically strong and well-equipped in uncertain times. The declaration that was adopted today between Sweden and Denmark demonstrates the will to continue reinforcing their bilateral relations and international cooperation, and to move forward in further integrating the Öresund region.

The declaration aims to:

  • strengthen cooperation in defence, security, resilience and preparedness;
  • jointly develop efforts in regional and European competitiveness, research and the green transition;
  • combat cross-border organised crime; and
  • promote initiatives for increased mobility in the Öresund region.

The Öresund Bridge

During the past 25 years, the Öresund Bridge has played a key role in building a cohesive Öresund region. The Bridge has made it possible for people to live, work and study across the border between Sweden and Denmark. Today, more than 22 000 people commute over the strait for work and, overall, there are approximately 100 000 crossings daily.
