Government puts pressure on EU ahead of Commission’s review of EU Emissions Trading System

Published

Next week, the European Commission will present its review of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Sweden’s Minister for EU Affairs Jessica Rosencrantz has sent a letter to the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with Sweden’s priorities and standpoints ahead of the upcoming negotiations.

The EU ETS is the EU’s most important climate policy instrument for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and creates clear incentives for companies to reduce their emissions and invest in new technology.

In Ms Rosencrantz’s letter, the Government emphasises the importance of the EU ETS continuing to be a strong and predictable transition driver to achieve the EU’s climate goals and strengthen European competitiveness. Sweden particularly highlights the need to maintain the current rate of emissions reduction, include waste incineration and more ships in the system, and create better conditions for permanent carbon dioxide removal through concepts such as Bio-CCS.

“Sweden has been a driving force in establishing EU climate goals for 2040, and is now working to ensure that the EU retains the tools needed to reach these goals. The Government wants the EU ETS to remain ambitious, stable and predictable. As Swedish industry is at the forefront of the climate transition, a strengthened EU ETS is both a climate issue and an issue of European competitiveness,” says Ms Rosencrantz.

This spring, the Government has conducted extensive advocacy work ahead of the Commission’s review and will continue to work with like-minded Member States to defend the bloc’s ambitious climate goals.
