The Swedish Presidency programme and priorities

  • On 1 January 2024, Sweden took over the Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The vision of the Nordic region being the world’s most integrated and sustainable region by 2030 will shape the Swedish Presidency. Over the course of the year, Sweden will also prioritise efforts to further integrate the Nordic region.

The Swedish Presidency programme and priorities

The programme for the 2024 Swedish Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers includes four prioritised areas:

    • An integrated Nordic region without border barriers
    • A green Nordic region
    • A competitive Nordic region
    • A socially sustainable Nordic region
    • An integrated Nordic region without border barriers

It must be easy to live, study, work and operate a business anywhere in the Nordic region and across its borders. We need to step up the pace of our efforts to eliminate border barriers, particularly in consideration of the challenges that emerged during and after the pandemic.

For this reason, the 2024 Swedish Presidency will work actively to achieve this in relevant ministerial council configurations and in the Border Barriers Council. The 70th anniversary of the single labour market will also be highlighted.

    A green Nordic region

The Nordic Region must continue to be a forerunner in a competitive and innovation-driven transition, both at home and through promotion of Nordic green solutions in the rest of the world.

Climate and environmental issues are global matters and the Nordic countries must therefore remain a strong and clear voice in promoting effective solutions in international environmental and climate negotiations.

    A competitive Nordic region

As regions go, the Nordic region is one of the world’s largest. Our global competitiveness is essential not only for developing our business sector, but also for securing our future prosperity. One of the core tasks of Nordic cooperation is to jointly ensure better skills supply and create the best possible conditions for people and businesses to operate across borders.

    A socially sustainable Nordic region

A socially sustainable society is one in which people feel safe and secure, and that it has strong resilience to serious crime. The Swedish Presidency will focus particularly on cooperation and exchanges of knowledge and experience between the Nordic countries regarding organised crime, welfare  crime, violent extremism and terrorism, and transfer of enforcement.
