Visit by United Arab Emirates’ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs focuses on expanded cooperation

Published

On 13 March, the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited Stockholm. The aim was to deepen cooperation in trade, investment and regional and global issues. Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard hosted the visit, which was a significant step in strengthening ties between the two countries.

“The UAE is an important market for Swedish businesses, one of the world’s largest investors and an influential regional actor. This visit provided an opportunity to further deepen our relations. It was particularly valuable to discuss issues such as Ukraine, Gaza and Syria. In uncertain times like these, it’s important to build broad alliances and engage in dialogue,” says Ms Malmer Stenergard.

The visit was an opportunity to discuss the security challenges the countries face in their respective regions. At Ms Malmer Stenergard’s meeting with H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a Memorandum of Understanding regarding regular political dialogue on issues of mutual interest was signed.

In 2024, the UAE was the largest recipient of Swedish goods exports in the Middle East. There is great potential for Swedish businesses in innovation, digitalisation and green transition. Approximately 250 Swedish businesses are already represented in the country and active in areas such as telecommunications, transport, digitalisation and green energy.

“The UAE is undergoing an extensive green and digital transition, with great opportunities for Swedish businesses to contribute. I’m glad that so many Swedish businesses have already discovered the opportunities that the UAE can offer, and I hope even more recognise this potential. There is great demand for Swedish solutions and expertise,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa.

In addition to trade, investment and humanitarian issues were discussed at the meeting with Mr Dousa. The delegation also met with Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and had a meeting with representatives of the Swedish business sector. HM The King and HRH Crown Princess Victoria also received H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Royal Palace.
