5.3 Absence of head of mission

During the absence of the accredited Head of Mission, a Chargé d'Affaires ad interim will act provisionally as Head of Mission. The Head of Mission should notify the Protocol Department, before departure, of the name of the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim.

If such notification is not possible, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the sending State should notify the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the receiving State of the appointment of the Chargé d'Affaires ad interim.
