International defence cooperation

On 12 May, EU defence ministers will meet in Brussels within the framework of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. Continued EU support to Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and its implications for European defence and security, and strengthening European defence preparedness are on the agenda. Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will represent Sweden at the meeting.

On 11 and 12 February, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will take part in the meeting of EU Defence Ministers and the Meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence. In conjunction with the NATO Defence Ministers meeting, a meeting will also take place within the framework of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group. Increased support to Ukraine will be a central theme of all three meetings.

The Government has appointed Göran Mårtensson as Sweden’s National Armaments Director (NAD). Göran Mårtensson will assume the position on 1 December 2025, when the role is transferred from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to the Ministry of Defence.

On 1 December, EU defence ministers will meet within the framework of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. Continued support to Ukraine and defence readiness are on the agenda for the meeting, where Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will represent Sweden.

On 26 November, Poland announced that it has chosen Sweden to partner in its submarine programme. Poland is purchasing three submarines in one of Sweden’s largest-ever naval export deals.

On 15 October, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will be in Brussels to take part in the NATO defence ministers meeting and a meeting held within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG). On the same day, he will also join his fellow EU defence ministers for an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council (Defence).

The Government has previously tasked the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration with identifying, testing and funding solutions for defence innovation needed by Ukraine. The Government is now doubling this initiative to SEK 300 million, financed through support package 20 to Ukraine. A panel of experts from Sweden and Ukraine has reviewed various types of anti-drone systems and is now taking them forward for serial production.

On 22–23 September, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will travel to Germany for a bilateral meeting with German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius.

On 18 September, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson is visiting Portugal for bilateral talks with Portuguese Minister of National Defence Nuno Melo.

On 16 September, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson received Brazilian Air Force Commander Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno. During their meeting, they discussed strategic defence cooperation between Sweden and Brazil, with a focus on air defence.

Letter of intent between Sweden and Poland concerning military-technical cooperation, from 2 September 2025.

Sweden and Poland will enter into military-technical cooperation under the terms of a letter of intent signed by Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and his Polish counterpart, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, during Mr Jonson’s visit to Poland on 2 September.

On 2 September, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will visit Poland for bilateral meetings and to take part in the MSPO international defence industry exhibition. On 3–4 September, he will visit Czechia to take part in the IISS Prague Defence Summit 2025.

On 27 August, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard received Peru’s Minister of Defence Walter Astudillo and Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmer Schialer for meetings and lunch at Karlberg Palace in Stockholm.

Thailand is purchasing three Gripen E and one Gripen F aircraft from Sweden, including training, equipment and logistical support. The sales were confirmed during an official Thai visit to Stockholm on 25 August.

On 28–29 August, EU defence ministers will gather for an informal meeting of defence ministers in Copenhagen. Issues concerning EU security and defence cooperation will dominate the meeting’s agenda. Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will represent Sweden at the meeting.

On 9–10 July, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will visit Colombia and Peru. The purpose of the trip is to discuss Sweden’s possibilities of deeper defence cooperation with both countries.

On 30 May–1 June, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson will travel to Singapore to take part in the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual intergovernmental security conference.
