Sweden in the UN: A more effective United Nations
Published
Despite its size, Sweden is one of the larger donors to the UN system. Precisely because we are a friend of the UN system, we also make demands and level criticism when necessary. A reformed UN, which improves and streamlines its efforts, is a priority for Sweden. Geopolitical changes have put the issue of UN reform higher on the agenda. UN agencies will need to focus on their core mandates.
Governance of organisations, funds and programmes within the UN system must be transparent and effective, and the Swedish Government sets clear requirements for results, governance and follow-up. Accountability must be demanded at all times. The Government supports UN reforms that contribute to increased efficiency, both in the development system and the international financial architecture, as well as in the work of the Security Council.
As a strong, reliable and demanding partner, Sweden pushes for the UN to continuously develop and improve its work. We set high standards for the efficiency and transparency of development assistance channelled through the UN and focus Sweden’s UN cooperation on activities that effectively contribute to the Government’s priorities.
The Government is also pushing to get more Swedes in strategic positions at the UN. Sweden’s influence and political impact should be on a par with our engagement. Sweden is a major donor to the UN system, but underrepresented in UN procurement statistics. Procurements often take place in sectors where Swedish businesses are world leaders. They present significant business opportunities and could also contribute to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 and Paris Agreement. The Government is now implementing a special initiative to improve the prospects for Swedish companies to take part in tenders and win UN procurements by strengthening and increasing governance of subordinate authorities and organisations. This includes Business Sweden being given an enhanced mandate to systematically identify procurement opportunities within the UN system and provide comprehensive digital information on upcoming procurements.
