World’s first framework for digital governance adopted by UN
On 22 September, the Global Digital Compact (GDC), the first framework for global governance of digital technology, was adopted in connection with the UN Summit of the Future in New York. The Swedish Government was represented by Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch. The GDC is one of the most concrete aspects of the multilateral Pact for the Future adopted by UN Member States ahead of the 2024 General Assembly. Other key discussions addressed the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030, energy policy, development issues and how to achieve the global climate goals.

Banks and financial institutions express support for expanding global production of fossil-free electricity from nuclear energy by 2050
Yesterday, 23 September, Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch took part in a meeting between ministers and other high representatives of countries that backed a COP28 declaration on the need to triple production of nuclear energy by 2050. In conjunction with the meeting, global banks and financial institutions backed the countries’ ambition to increase production of electricity from nuclear energy.

Ebba Busch to lead Swedish delegation to UN Summit of the Future in New York
On 21–23 September, Minister for Energy, Business and Industry and Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch will take part in the opening of the UN Summit of the Future in New York. Ahead of the Summit, Sweden has played an important role leading negotiations on the new Global Digital Compact. In conjunction with the Summit, Ms Busch will attend a G7 ministerial meeting on continued energy support to Ukraine. She will also meet representatives of governments, banks and industry to discuss the role of nuclear energy in the green transition.

Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari attends 68th IAEA General Conference in Vienna on 17 September
On 17 September, Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari is attending the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference. Sweden’s participation is focused on highlighting Sweden’s new nuclear energy policy in the international arena, and also the consequences of Russia’s full-scale invasion for Ukraine.

Sweden and the United States enter into new nuclear power agreement
Sweden and the United States have entered into a new agreement to further the development of new nuclear power. Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bilateral nuclear cooperation in Washington, D.C. with US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm. This agreement aims to strengthen cooperation between Sweden and the United States to support the development of new nuclear power.

International cooperation to triple global capacity of nuclear energy
On Saturday 2 December at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, French President Emmanuel Macron and the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry – together with heads of state and government, ministers and industrial leaders from some 20 countries – launched a declaration for strengthened cooperation in the area of civil nuclear energy.

Sweden and the United States strengthen energy research cooperation
Research and innovation promote progress in the energy sector. Minister for Education Mats Persson today signed an implementation agreement for energy research cooperation with the United States. The agreement was signed in the Reactor Hall at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where research reactor R1 – Sweden’s first nuclear reactor – contributed to research between 1954 and 1970.

Swedish Presidency accomplishes a great deal in the areas of business and energy
We are four months into the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU, and good progress has been made in achieving the energy transition and enhancing long-term growth and productivity in the EU. In parallel, negotiations on EU legislation are ongoing – several agreements have been made, including with regard to the European Chips Act and the Renewable Energy Directive.

Ebba Busch to chair Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council in Brussels
EU energy ministers will gather on 28 March under the leadership of Minister for Energy, Business and Industry Ebba Busch. The Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council (TTE) is expected to adopt a general guideline on the gas and hydrogen package. The aim is to increase the use of renewable and low-carbon gas in the EU’s energy system, while the use of natural gas decreases.

European Council discussed Ukraine, energy and external relations
Immediate and long-term support to Ukraine was on the agenda when EU leaders met in Brussels on 15 December. They also discussed the EU’s response to the energy crisis and EU-US relations. On 14 December, the first-ever summit between the leaders of EU and ASEAN member states was held. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson represented Sweden.
